“Congratulations to Judy from the Inland Empire chapter for sharing her love of sewing with some 7th & 8th graders at a local school that has a sewing club. And a big shoutout to Margaret who also attended as Judy's assistant. Judy gave an engaging presentation about the two-fold top that really got the kids excited to do some sewing. Great job, ladies!”
Judy used the 2-fold top to show the different fashion options of this one top. Margaret suggested this pattern because there are only two seams and can be made in so many different ways. The students began by designing the tops on paper.
Each student received one yard of black t-shirt knit fabric which was donated by Sandra and her husband at the Fabric Shop in Pomona. Judy put together sewing kits so the students “would be able to see their creations come off the drawing board so to speak.” With a variety of sewing levels in the group, Judy’s extensive beginner sewing kit of 17 items included scissors, pins, measuring tape, thread, and a seam ripper. Kits remain in the classroom to use during class.
In the kit was this lovely note from Judy to the students.
“I hope you will be able to use this sewing kit for many years to come. You may not end up designing or making your own clothes, but you will be able to at least sew on a button, hem a pair of pants or do some mending. Hopefully you will develop a lifelong love of sewing as I have. It is a useful skill to have.”
